The district is thrilled to announce the reinstatement of the swim program for students with disabilities enrolled in high school and the 18 - 21-year-old program. The new program is specifically designed to accommodate students with disabilities. This program has been carefully crafted to build upon the previous program of providing a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive aquatic experience for all students.
The Marysville School District understands the importance of physical activity and its benefits for overall health and well-being and has developed an adaptive swim program that will offer students with disabilities the opportunity to:
Improve physical fitness: Swimming is a low-impact exercise that can enhance strength, flexibility, and endurance.
Develop water safety skills: Our program will emphasize essential water safety techniques, such as floating, treading water, and recognizing potential hazards.
Boost self-confidence: Swimming can foster a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem as students progress and achieve their goals.
Socialize and have fun: Our program will provide a supportive and inclusive environment where students can interact with peers and enjoy the camaraderie of swimming together.
In addition, the key features and benefits of the program include:
Goal-Oriented Activities: A structured program designed with specific learning objectives, such as improving motor skills, cognitive function, or social interaction. Each activity serves a developmental purpose, making the time spent in the pool more impactful. Lesson plans have been developed to provide students with a well-rounded instructional and fun experience. View lesson plans HERE.
Individualized Support: Activities tailored to each student's specific needs, ensuring that exercises are appropriate for their developmental level.
Increased Supervision: In the program, students will be closely supervised by trained instructors who can ensure safety and provide constant guidance.
Focus on Water Safety: The program will include specific lessons on water safety, ensuring that students learn essential skills like floating, swimming, and responding in an emergency.
Multimodal Learning: Structured activities integrate various therapeutic techniques (physical, cognitive, social) to engage students on multiple levels.
Measurable Progress: The student’s progress will be tracked, allowing instructors to identify areas for improvement and adjust the program accordingly.
The adaptive aquatics program will offer students a valuable opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun in a supportive environment. Parents and guardians of students enrolled will receive direct communication from their child’s school or teacher.
