The Marysville School District recently held a meeting on November 14 with the School Closure Committee. The committee studied the recommendations made based on the feedback from the eight public meetings held with parents, community members, and staff.
Starting with a clean slate on closure options, the public meetings took attendees through a series of information about the district’s schools, including school building capacity, age and condition of the school, and the impact on families if the school were to be closed or reconfigured. Participants also learned about the factors influencing the school closures, which included declining enrollment over the last 14 years from 11,500 students to 9,000 students and changes in the state funding model, all contributing to the need to close and/or consolidate schools. The target is to save $2 million each year. The Financial Oversight Committee has recommended the closure of schools or “right-sizing” the district as an effective strategy to save money.
The feedback and information from the public meetings provided the basis for the options for the School Closure Committee to review. Those options include:
Option A:
Reconfiguration (elementary schools to K - 6 grades)
Grades 7 & 8 at Cedarcrest, Totem, and 10th Street Middle Schools
Close Marysville Middle School entity (building would be repurposed)
Close Liberty Elementary School and relocate Liberty students to a portion of the Marysville Middle School building
Relocate Legacy High School to the Marysville Getchell High School campus
Relocate 10th Street Middle School to the Legacy High School building
Option B:
Close Cascade and Liberty Elementary Schools
Relocate Legacy High School to the Marysville Getchell High School campus
Relocate 10th Street Middle School to the Legacy High School building
Option C:
Close Cascade and Liberty Elementary Schools
Close Totem Middle School (building would be repurposed)
Relocate Legacy High School to the Marysville Getchell High School campus
Relocate 10th Street Middle School to the Legacy High School building
Option D:
Reconfiguration (elementary schools to K - 6 grades)
Grades 7 & 8 at Cedarcrest, Totem, and 10th Street Middle Schools
Close Marysville Middle School (entity), disperse students to other middle schools
Close Liberty Elementary (building)
Relocate Liberty at Marysville Middle School
Relocate Legacy High School to the Totem Middle School building and 10th Street to the Legacy building
It is important to note that each option has pros and cons. At this time, these are only options. The options will be presented to the school board during a work study session on December 2. The presentation will be an informational report, no action will be taken by the board during or following the work study session.
After the school board takes action on a proposed recommendation at a later date, the next steps in the school closure process will take place, including public hearings to share information on the actions that will be taken for any schools impacted by the decision.
