Attendance Awareness Month
September is Attendance Awareness Month and Washington state and Marysville needs some help in this area. Making sure our student attend school every day will have long-term positive affects for their personal success, as well as our community’s success.
Did you know?
- A 2008 Arizona State University study by the Rodel Community Scholars tracked students from kindergarten through high school found that dropout rates were linked to poor attendance, beginning in kindergarten.
- Elementary school students who miss an average of just two school days per month often have difficulty keeping up with their peers academically and tend to fall behind in reading. However, when students are able to read on grade level by the end of third grade, they are three to four times more likely to graduate high school and attend college, post-graduate, or professional development classes than their peers who struggle with reading.
- The effects of poor attendance are serious for our entire community, not just the students who miss school. In addition to falling behind in academics, students who are not in school on a regular basis are more likely to get into trouble with the law and cause problems in their communities.
- As parents, staff and community members, we can all play a part! Whether it’s helping to create welcoming environment by volunteering in your local school, organizing a local cleanup, or being a positive role model for a student in your life; or assisting vulnerable students by ensuring they get the basic necessities – a roof over the head and healthy food in their bellies. Want to do more? Consider joining the Community Truancy Board and help repeatedly absent students find their drive and get on a path to success. For more information about the Community Truancy Board, go to www.msd25.org/truancy.
Suicide Prevention Month
It is a difficult topic, but one that we as a community must address. Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. Learn more about how you can take action, find support, and learn how to support others at www.afsp.org, www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org, andwww.nami.org/suicideawarenessmonth. The Marysville School District also offers FREE Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) trainings for the community. Find upcoming classes HERE.
Unity and Wellness Month
October marks the second annual Unity and Wellness Month! The Marysville School District is partnering with Tulalip Tulalip Tribes Youth Services as they focus on a different area of student wellness each week in October.
- Week 1: Suicide Prevention Week #LifeIsSacred
- Week 2: Healthy Relationships Week #LoveIsRespect
- Week 3: Kindness Week #KindnessMatters
- Week 4: Red Ribbon Week/Substance Abuse Prevention #BeDrugFree
Schools will be provided with age-appropriate activities and community wellness events will take place throughout the month. Stay tuned…
