Monday, January 18, is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King's birthday was finally approved as a federal holiday in 1983, and all 50 states made it a state government holiday by 2000. Officially, King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. But the King holiday is marked every year on the third Monday in January.
Dr. King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech* during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, in which he called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States.
